A message from the President -
Dear Members,
1999 was an outstanding year for
Cape May National. First and foremost is the contribution of our
new management team of new Head Pro, David Smith, and new Superintendent
Keith Chapman. David provided the leadership on numerous
improvements including the completely redesigned and decorated pro shop,
adding an exciding display of new products: the new clothing line, golf
hats, shirts and jackets are beautiful. Cape May Nation is one of
the few Ping centers in the state.
David also established the
bag drop, first tee and practice facility operation at a top level. We
all loved the starter, Jenny and the fine junior and women's
programs. Emilie's handpainted tee signs were enjoyed by all,
especially bird lovers. These tee signs are unique in the golf
industry and made quite a splash in the newspapers.
Superintendent Keith Chapman
oversaw a 100% improvement in course conditions. The greens were
outstanding all year long. I was fortunate to play Pebble Beach,
Merion, King's Mill and other fine courses this year and Cape May
National's greens were second to none.
Improvements included
installing the Kirby distance markers the same markers used at
Pebble Beach. Also the new 18th tee, irrigation improvements and
surviving the worst drought in New Jersey's history were major
accomplishments.
Most importantly is the great
satisfaction that Cape May National is becoming an institution. As
the years go by, we keep hearing from members around the United States
who fondly remember their days at Cape May National and how important
those memories are to those members. People like Bill Kelly, Tom
Zesiger, Jenny, Mickey, Jimmy Branson, Jim Zweigle, Hords all stay in
touch and ask about Cape May National.
And one of our greatest
memories will be our trip to Pebble Beach with Skee Riegel for the 52nd
anniversary of his victory at the US Amateur. Pebble Beach loved
Skee and treated the 12 person Cape May National delegation like
visiting royalty. We never expected to be treated so well, invited
to play eighteen holes with Skee, a private dinner hosted by the
Chairman and invitations to attend the Champions Dinner.
We also look forward to
hosting five championships this year. State Championship, South
Jersey championships, and two Philadelphia PGA championships are all
recognition that Cape May National is not only fun to play, but a solid
test of championship golf as well.
Have a great new season,
Bob Mullock

From the Superintendent -
Reflecting upon the 1999 golf season, I'm going to highlight the things
that will help us in the year 2000. We will be aerating throughout
the course and thatching a lot in the spring. We have already
thatched the fairways twice and I think that you can see a difference
already. When you are in a drought season, like
1999, these
things will help the course last longer. Just a few things that we
have added this year in the way of improvements: 30% of the irrigation
heads have been changed, new hole signs, permanent yardage markers in
the fairways, and construction of the eighteenth tee. Things that
you will see being done are: the bunker on the ninth fairway, drainage
throughout the winter, putting more irrigation on mounds between 2 &
4, and to the right of 16 mounds and new heads added in fairways.
Also there will be bunker improvements and new tee markers. Have a
great winter and looking forward to seeing you in the new millennium.
